Sparkles is a stunning Bernese mountain dog living in a beautiful house built in the 20′s with 4 acres to run around. She still looks and acts like a puppy even though she is 7 years old. She is gorgeous and knows it. She flirts like crazy and makes you fall in love with her while also letting you know you she really only has eyes for her owner who you can see in the photos. She is regal and royal and commands all your attention. She is mellow, playful, fun, and extemly well loved….a perfect dog!

How does a photographer make a great shot of a dog and a baby together?

I frequently get asked to take photos of dog and babies together…it’s a hard thing to do and I am always looking for a great scenario. If the baby is too small and the dog too big the picture can be awkward. If the baby is old enough its hard to get them together in a shot. Since I get asked for this type of shot a lot I thought I would go searching for good photos of this online and I started putting a collection together on pinterest. Sofie the Whoodle led me on a tour of Old Town Chicago showing me her favorite spots on the way to Lincoln Park. The brick in old town makes for some great shots and Lincoln Park itself never stops looking amazing in every season and in new ways each time I go. It makes for a beautiful backdrop for dog photos and gave Sofie lots of opportunities for squirrel watching. Sofie is an amazing, spirited and fun dog…I really didn’t want to leave.

Photographing black dogs is not for the faint of heart! There are so many challenges… the density of the black fur, lighting, deciding whether to shoot close up or far away, and most importantly managing all these things while trying to capture the dog’s personality, which is mission #1. Obe was such a sweet, patient, beautiful portugese water dog I wanted so badly to be able to capture his personality. He was a dark black with white markings and his fur had such a beautiful texture. He strutted proudly around my studio with a yellow frisbee in his mouth and kept pawing at my leg to get attention. He sat perfectly still waiting for his treats and gave me such beautiful looks. I hope I managed to present his proud and distinguished personality!

Maddy came along for her newborn baby brother’s photo shoot and I snapped some candid shots in the studio while the baby was resting/crying/feeding. I loved Maddy’s character and attitude and the very unique and expressions on her face. Maddy is a 6 year old rescue dog from Chicago. She was tons of fun….

I took these photos last fall and am posting them on my new website for inspiration for the upcoming fall season. Fall is hands down the best time to do family and pet/dog photos around Chicago. The light is fantastic and the scenery perfect. We ended making a large art book of all the photos from this shoot and they are still some of my favorite photographs….

Flat coated retriever 3 month old puppy photos

Brode is a black, flat coated retriever whom I photographed as she turned 3 months old. Most of her adorable puppy looks remained but she was starting to mellow a little bit. When she arrived she sat on my lap, licked me and waited patiently for her Mom to come back from parking the car. She was mellow and friendly with an amazing disposition. We photographed her outside and inside with both natural and studio light. Her owner wanted to capture the puppy in her before she grew out of it. This breed of dog makes an awesome pet…sweet playful and happy.
